Saving money is much easier when it feels like a game. The 52-week savings challenge is one of the most popular ways to build a savings habit — and by the end of the year, you’ll have a meaningful amount set aside.

How the classic challenge works

You save a little more each week, matching the week number:

  • Week 1: save $1
  • Week 2: save $2
  • Week 3: save $3
  • …
  • Week 52: save $52

By the end of the year you’ll have saved $1,378. The early weeks are easy, which helps you build momentum.

4 versions for every budget

1. The reverse challenge

Start with $52 in week 1 and count down to $1 in week 52. You save the same $1,378, but the big amounts come early in the year — when motivation is highest — and December (often an expensive month) is easy.

2. The fixed-amount challenge

Save the same amount every week, such as $10, $20 or $25. At $20 a week you’ll have $1,040 by the end of the year. Simple and predictable.

3. The double challenge

Save twice the week number: $2 in week 1 up to $104 in week 52. Total: $2,756. Great for a bigger goal like a holiday or emergency fund.

4. The pick-a-week challenge

Use a tracker numbered 1 to 52 and choose any number each week, depending on what you can afford. Tight week? Pick a small number. Good week? Pick a big one. You still reach $1,378 by the end.

Tips for success

  1. Give it a purpose. An emergency fund, holiday or Christmas fund is more motivating than “savings”.
  2. Use a separate account so the money isn’t spent by accident.
  3. Automate where you can. Some banks let you schedule increasing transfers.
  4. Track visually. Colouring in each week is surprisingly satisfying.
  5. Don’t quit after a missed week. Catch up later or switch to the pick-a-week version.
  6. Do it with someone. A partner, friend or family member keeps you accountable.

Where should the money go?

A popular plan is to use your challenge savings to build a starter emergency fund. Once that’s done, the next year’s challenge can fund a holiday or sinking funds.

Can I use any currency?

Absolutely. The challenge works with any amount: 1, 10 or 100 per week in your own currency. Choose a number that feels slightly challenging but realistic.

Try other challenges too

If the 52-week challenge goes well, try the 100 envelope challenge or a 30-day no-spend challenge.

Frequently asked questions

When should I start the 52-week challenge?

Any time! You don’t need to wait for January. Start this week and count 52 weeks from today.

What if I miss a week?

Just catch up when you can, or switch to the pick-a-week version and choose a smaller amount. The goal is building the habit, not being perfect.

Should I keep the money in cash?

A savings account is safer than cash at home. Transfer the amount each week and colour in your tracker.

The Savings Challenge Pack includes a printable 52-week tracker (with space to write your own amounts), plus the 100 envelope challenge, a no-spend challenge and more.
